Homeless families are no longer being put in Bed and Breakfast accommodation by Tower Hamlets Council longer than the six-week legal limit, latest figures show.

This contrasts to 2015 when Mayor Biggs inherited what he said was “the worst performing local authority in the country” for families in B&B.

We were shamefully the worst borough, he said. But we have turned round the unfairness of families being made to live in such unsuitable accommodation.

The number hit 174 in 2015, but no families have been in B&B for more than six weeks so far this year, the local authority maintains.

A town hall undertook to find more accommodation and to streamline the paperwork to move families out of B&B.

Deputy Mayor Sirajul Islam said: The council should make sure families are not forced to live in unsuitable Bed and Breakfast.

Tower Hamlets became compliant with government regulations by last September. Only three families so far this year have been put in B&B.
