British forces have dropped a second round of aid to people trapped as they flee advancing militants in Iraq. The RAF was able to deliver “essential supplies” over Mount Sinjar last night to assist the Yazidis, the Department for International Development (DfID) confirmed.
Islamic State militants have killed at least 500 members of Iraq’s Yazidi minority during their offensive in the north. The Islamic State, which has declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria, has prompted tens of thousands of Yazidis and Christians to flee for their lives during their push to within a 30-minute drive of the Kurdish regional capital Arbil.
Exhausted and terrorised Yazidis are fleeing by any means possible, most are on foot. Thousands have gone days without food and water as they make their way down from Mount Sinjar.
