Customers happy with cattle prices

Customers happy with cattle prices

Customers are satisfied with cattle prices at the various temporary cattle markets in the capital despite some confusion that imported Indian cattle might drive down the prices of local livestock.

Cattle traders and customers at the Khilkhet Banarupa, Gabtoli, Agargaon, and Talotala cattle markets informed that the prices remained relatively stable. Customers and traders said that the prices of bulls were compara-tively low yesterday.

All the markets have adequate supply of cattle. Unless a sudden crisis emerges in the last few days before Eid, customers would be able to buy sacrificial animals at decent prices, they added.

Rokonuzzaman, a dealer at the Khilkhet Banarupa cattle market, said, “Customers are happy with low prices, but hope that with more customers coming to buy sacrificial animals in the last two days before Eid we will be able to get better prices for our livestock.”

In the past few days due to continuous rain, business at the various cattle markets remained sluggish, but it showed signs of picking up yesterday.

With Eid-ul-Azha just a few days away, some traders at the Gabtoli cattle who market managed to sell a part of their stock at expected prices earlier are ready to sell the remaining cattle at lower prices.

Abdur Rahman, a trader at the Gabtoli cattle market, said, “I came here last Friday with eight bulls. I sold four of them by Tuesday and I want to sell the remaining as soon as possible. I was expecting Tk. 65,000 for my bulls, but today (Wednesday) I am willing to sell them for Tk. 55,000. I would make less profit, but my family is expecting me and I have had enough of the mud and slush in the market.”

The prices of bulls range from Tk. 35,000 – 3 lakh. The demand for medium-sized local cattle is more than the imported Indian animals. Though, the prices of bulls and cows have remained reasonable, goats are commanding a higher price compared to the previous years.

This year, a medium-sized goat is selling from Tk. 35,000 that went for Tk. 25,000-27,000 last year. With Eid round the corner, the cattle markets in the capital remained busy at night even. Most of the customers are interested in buying small or medium-sized cows.

Ahead of Eid on Friday, trucks carrying cattle are still coming into the capital. Some of the cattle mar-kets have become so crowded that they have spilled over on to the adjoining streets. As a result, a lot of muck has covered the streets. The cattle market in Uttara is causing frequent traffic jams in Sectors 11 and 12.

The Chief Estate Officer of the North City Corporation, Aminul Islam, said, “Open spaces belonging to the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) were given to the leaseholders. If any market is set up on the streets then the local administration will take stern action.”

However, local people alleged that the Chhatra League and the Juba League leaders have actively en-couraged the expansion of the cattle markets on to the streets, causing harassment to common people. They complained that the police failed to take action against the errant cattle traders who are conduct-ing business in the streets.
