Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, keeping hopes alive for the enactment of the Goods and Services Tax Bill or GSF be-fore the beginning of the next financial year.
The 45-minute meeting at 7, Race Course Road did not result in an immediate breakthrough yesterday, but it did serve to break the ice between the government and the Congress.
This was the first face-to-face meeting between the prime minister and Sonia Gandhi since his BJP won a landslide victory in the national election last year. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkai-ah Naidu were also present during the meeting.
The government wants to implement GST by April 2016, but the deadline may be missed if Parliament does not pass the bill in the winter session.
