With the annual Perseid meteor shower about to reach its peak next week, astronomers and sky watchers are in for a real treat as they will also witness a full moon in the same sky.

However, there have already been many spectacular images taken from around the world as star gazers have been wowed by this celestial delight.

Furthermore, with the moon set to reach its perigee (the closest point to the earth during its orbit) the lunar body will appear up to 30% brighter and 14% larger than other full moons during the year.

However, the brightness of the moon might actually hamper the view of Perseid as a lighter sky means that the meteor shower may be more difficult to view.

Director of the meteor section of the Society for Polar Astronomy, Tony Markham, gave would-be viewers some sage advice: “The Perseids are rich in bright meteors and so many Perseids will still be seen despite the moonlit sky background. You can minimise the effect of the moonlight by observing with your back to the moon – possibly viewing the Cassiopeia/Cepheus/Ursa Minor area. If possible, keep the moon hidden behind trees or a nearby building.”
