Khaleda still remains confined

On the fourth day of confinement, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia still cannot leave her Gulshan office with law enforcers still deployed in front of the main gate.

A dozen sand laden-trucks which were parked since Sunday midnight near Khaleda’s office from early yesterday, have been taken away.

But the main gate still remains locked, our correspondent covering the event reports from the spot.

But two lorries of policemen and the water canon remained standing there since Sunday midnight.

The security in front of her office was seen relaxed from 7:30pm yesterday but it has been again enhanced this morning.
Meanwhile, police asked three leaders of Tablig-e Jamaat to take permission from the deputy commissioner’s office when they tried to enter Khaleda’s office.

“We came here to invite the BNP chief to join Biswa Ijtema scheduled to be on January 9 but police asked us to acquire permission from the authorities,” Abdur Rahim, a leader of the Tablig-e Jamaat.

Khaleda made her last-ditch effort to come out yesterday afternoon by a car, but law enforcers locked all the gates.
Cops also used pepper spray to disperse the party leaders and activists waiting inside the gate. Several journalists were injured in the police action.

Protesting her confinement in her Gulshan office and the locking of the party office by police, Khaleda called an indefinite, countrywide blockade starting today.

She wanted to go to the party’s central office at Nayapaltan, where leaders and activists were asked to gather for holding a rally yesterday to denounce the January 5 one-sided parliamentary election.

The opposition party, which boycotted the polls last year, dubs the day as the “Democracy Killing Day”.
