Russia have built what military chiefs are claiming is the world’s first weapon to use microwave energy ‘death-rays’ to target military drones.
And there is said to be no other weapon like it in the world.
The prototype was revealed during the Arms High-tech military exhibition in Armenia.
Instead of using rounds of bullets or shells to destroy enemy targets, this new weapon will use directed microwave energy.
A spokesman for the company said: “[We have] already established samples of such weapons, and they have proved their effectiveness.
“This is a completely new type of weapon, which has no analogues is the country, and [we] are not afraid to say, in the world.”
Igor Korotchenko, a chief officer in the National Defence , said: “We are talking about a prototype.”
He said that the weapon can aim “microwave pulses at powerful enemy targets with the aim of disabling their electronic equipment, which leads to a complete loss of functionality.
“The most promising one for combat use […] can be disabling enemy tactical drones directly over the battlefield.
“This weapon is apparently capable of hitting targets at a distance of over one kilometre.”
Korotchenko said the next step was to ensure the new prototype complied with Defence Ministry protocol.
Once it has been modified and meets specific requirements, it is thought that it can then be subsequently adopted by the Defence Ministry for use.
But others have warned about Russia’s advancements in military technology.
Earlier this year, according to RT.com, US Air Force General Philip Breedlove said: “They [Russia] have invested a lot in electronic warfare because they know we are a connected and precise force and they need to disconnect us to make us imprecise.”
Worryingly, he claimed that while the US have some power in electronic warfare, they are not able to compete with the likes of Russia.
He added: “We have electronic warfare capability – we probably do not have the capacity we need now.”
