Penang Immigration has rounded up 55 foreigners including 12 Bangladeshis in Bukit Mertajam of Malaysia on charge of working there without work permit and for overstay, the Malaysian daily The Star reported.

The other workers are from Myanmar and one from Nepal, Penang Immigration sources said.

During a two-hour operation codenamed Ops Bersepadu started at 10:00pm (local time) on Friday, the workers were arrested from Bukit Mertajam Fish Wholesalers Association’s market in Jalan Padang Lalang.

Eighty-one personnel from the department and Seberang Prai Municipal Council took part in the operation.

“Some of the workers tried to escape by hiding inside the boxes in trucks but failed. Two were caught inside a water tank,” an immigration official said, adding that the illegal workers had been taken to the state Immigration Department office in Seberang Jaya for investigations.
