UK growth suffers sharper slowdown as construction and manufacturing stutter

British economy expands by 0.5pc in the third quarter, official data shows.

Britain’s economic recovery slowed more sharply than expected in the third quarter amid a contraction in construction and manufacturing output.

The economy expanded by 0.5pc in the three months to September, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This was weaker than economists’ expectations for 0.6pc growth and follows an expansion of 0.7pc in the previous three months.

Compared with a year ago, the economy expanded by 2.3pc, again below expectations of 2.4pc.

While concerns about a slowdown in global growth have weighed on output in recent months, Tuesday’s data still represent the 11th consecutive quarter of UK growth.

However, a survey published on Monday showed British manufacturers continued to struggle this month. Factory orders dropped to their weakest level in two-and-a-half years in the quarter to October, according to the Confederation of British Industry, as the sector continued to be constrained by the strong pound and “subdued global growth”.
