MH17: The world’s most dangerous skies

Airspace to avoid around the world


Airlines avoid or are restricted by authorities from traveling over these unsafe airspaces due to regional conflict, such as in eastern Ukraine.

 

 


The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration halted air travel to or from Tel Aviv, Israel for at least 24 hours after a rocket fired from Gaza struck near the Ben-Gurion International Airport.

 

 

 


  • US flights are prohibited from entering Libyan airspace as security in the country is unpredictable and many military weapons are in the hands of everyday people.

     


  • Iraq is considered a no-fly red zone and as such planes are not allowed to fly below 20,000 feet unless on immediate arrival or departure from Erbil International Airport.

     

    Eastern Ukraine

Airlines avoid or are restricted by authorities from traveling over unsafe airspaces due to regional conflict, such as in eastern Ukraine.

After Flight 17 was shot down in eastern Ukraine on July 17, the Federal Aviation Administration extended existing regulation prohibited certain flights from operating in the potentially hostile airspace.
