What is La Tomatina Festival?

The food fight to end all food fights, La Tomatina in Spain’s Bunol, near Valencia, is likely to be the messiest festival you’ll ever attend. In fact, the mayhem lasts just one hour but, during that time, you’ll get to pelt (and be pelted) with more tomatoes that you ever dreamed of. Held every year on the last Wednesday of August, thousands of people from all over the world congregate to take part in a giant battle with more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes.

The food fight is the culmination of a week-long festival of music, performance, parades, fireworks and, on the night before the tomato fight, a giant paella cooking contest.

Prior to 2013, crowds at La Tomatina had reached epic proportions, with an estimated 50,000 people crammed into Bunol’s tiny streets. As a result, the food fight itself is now ticketed and limited to 20,000. No ticket, no throwing tomatoes.
